Abstract

The great war offers a modern overview of the history of Belgium during the first world war. The German invasion of 4 August 1914 brought the small Kingdom country Belgium, a neutral, peaceful and civil, with one stone in the middle of the steel storm of the world war. Using a multitude of published and unpublished material covers Sophie de Schaepdrijver, among other things, the ultimatum from Berlin, the ' German abominations ', the activism, lives in the occupied country, the iron front and the years after the war, when the realization dawned that the legacy of the great war would be one of Division.
